AI internship eligibility depends on the exact requisition. Check the degree, graduation date, experience, location and internship term before investing in an application. An engineering internship at an AI company is not automatically a PhD research position.

This guide explains how to make that comparison, with a checked Summer 2027 employer example and a checklist you can reuse.

How to read this guide: checked date, sources and what we could not verify

Checked October 20, 2026. The concrete employer example below comes from Harvey’s Summer 2027 engineering posting and its current official jobs index. The index listed this requisition when checked.

This is an eligibility-reading guide, not a claim that every employer follows the same requirements. Recheck the employer page before applying. Other companies’ degree policies, deadlines and sponsorship terms are not established by this example.

Undergraduate eligibility: graduation windows, GPA floors and return-to-school rules

Check the exact graduation window instead of assuming that all undergraduate internships have the same rule. Harvey’s Summer 2027 role requires current enrollment in a bachelor’s or master’s program in computer science, engineering or a related field, with graduation in December 2027 or later. Previous internship experience is also required.

For this particular role, a May 2027 graduation date does not meet the stated requirement. Do not extrapolate that restriction to every AI internship. Record any GPA floor or return-to-school rule only if the individual posting states one.

Master's eligibility: where it is explicitly named and where it is not

A master’s student should first look for a posting that explicitly includes master’s enrollment. Harvey’s example names bachelor’s and master’s programs and describes team matching across engineering areas including Applied AI. That establishes eligibility for this engineering requisition, not for every research team.

If another listing names only doctoral enrollment, do not assume a master’s degree is interchangeable. Ask the employer about ambiguous wording; publications or a strong portfolio do not override a stated degree requirement.

PhD eligibility: enrollment, penultimate year and publication expectations

For doctoral research roles, record exactly what the posting says about active enrollment, research area and expected graduation. Keep required qualifications separate from preferred experience.

This guide does not establish a universal publication requirement, conference list or penultimate-year rule. Use the specific employer’s research requisition as the authority, and link each requirement in your application tracker.

ML engineering internships versus research internships

Compare duties as well as job titles. Harvey’s engineering posting describes shipping a project through coding, testing and deployment, plus code review and collaboration with experienced engineers. It names work that may include retrieval, infrastructure, enterprise agents and evaluation of frontier models.

This is a useful example of AI-related engineering work. For a research internship, look separately for the actual research deliverables and degree requirements. Do not assume either track has a standard interview format. Harvey explicitly describes AI-assisted coding sessions for this role; that statement applies to Harvey’s process.

Location, work authorization and timing: what the listings actually say

Harvey’s role requires ability to work from its New York or San Francisco offices during the summer cohort and says relocation support is available. Its description specifies a twelve- or sixteen-week internship. The jobs index includes remote-related flags, but the explicit office requirement is the safer basis for an applicant’s decision. Ask the employer if the arrangement is unclear.

Record the employer’s exact work-authorization and sponsorship wording for each role. If the posting is silent, eligibility is unresolved. International students should confirm their own authorization with their university’s international-student office and the employer before accepting work. This guide does not provide immigration advice or establish a company-wide sponsorship policy.

AI-adjacent quant internships: eligibility only

Keep quant research, quant development and trading internships in a separate comparison. A general AI engineering listing does not establish their degree or interview requirements.

Use the quant and trading category to find a role, then read its original employer posting. Check the exact academic requirement, location and summer term rather than assuming finance experience is either required or unnecessary. Winter and off-cycle internships should not be treated as Summer 2027 openings.

Application checklist and where to find live ML roles

For each application, record the exact role title, original employer URL, date checked, degree requirement, graduation window, required experience, location, term and any stated authorization restriction. Mark a missing condition as a question to resolve, not permission to assume.

For the checked Harvey example, that means bachelor’s or master’s enrollment, graduation in December 2027 or later, prior internship experience and ability to work from the named offices. Use a project example relevant to the posting’s actual engineering duties.

Browse Summer 2027 machine learning and AI listings to identify candidates, then verify requirements on each employer’s own job page. Cracked Interns is free for students and pulls listings from company job boards. This guide does not certify an individual applicant’s eligibility.

Conclusion

Choose roles by their stated requirements and the work you want to do. Keep engineering and research tracks distinct, resolve ambiguous eligibility with the employer, and recheck the original posting before submitting. The checked example illustrates how to read a requisition, not a universal rule for AI hiring.
